Who We Are

We are a private airfield located on Waihi Road (State Highway Three), the main road North from Hawera.  We are the only aerodrome in South Taranaki.

The Aero club's history dates back to 1929 when the first aerodrome was leased at Dunlop Field, Turuturu Road. In 1935 the property of A. Spratt was purchased by the aero club and the site developed into a airfield for the region's benefit. This is the site still in use today. The large hangar that can be seen from the main road is the original hangar originally built at Dunlop Field.

We are easy to find from the air as well.

Mt Taranaki stands out for some distance by air, and as you come closer the Fonterra Dairy Factory is the next most distinctive land mark. This is the large "white" complex of buildings on the south-eastern side of Hawera. Once you locate Hawera and its famous water tower, all you need to do is line up Fonterra  with the water tower and basically you are pointed straight up runway 32 when approaching from the south.

Local aerodrome radio frequency is 124.65

Activate the AWIB on 130.65 with four clicks in quick succession.

Runway 32-14 can be lit for night operations (PAL, 4 clicks in quick succession on 124.00).

Avgas 100: Available by prior arrangement.

This can be available if needed but needs to be arrange beforehand.
